The first is a pain medication and the second is an anti-depressent. My mom has just had a really freaking horrible experience after having started the Tramadol while she was already on the Ami and I'm worried to death.

I know it's a shot in the dark, but if anyone knows from firsthand experience anything about these drugs, it's more than I know.

Thanks.

This website is quite specific that the 2 drugs should not be taken together (towards the end of the page). I hope your mom feels better soon.

I've taken tramadol before and personally it messed me up. I don't know about the other one at all. webmd has an RX section that might be helpful.

Did the same doctor prescribe both? Were they filled at the same pharmacy? Either one should have caught any cross interactions before prescribing or dispensing the medications.

I would definitely not let her take them together again. I would probably stop the tramadol and continue with the other, replacing the tramadol with another type of pain medicine and call her doctor immediately.

I do hope that there's no serious side effects from this and that she gets better soon!!!

The reason it lists the two together is an increased risk of drowsiness......ANY meds that cause any kind of drowsiness will be listed together. I'm not contradicting you, skinny, just pointing it out for IaGirl....knowing the situation, it's important for her to know. :) This affect wouldn't be applicable in this particular case (but I know she didn't specifically mention it here, so that's ok).

I take Ultracet, which is a combo of tylenol and tramedol, for my back. I've never had any problems with it as far as drowsiness or feeling ill. I've never taken straight tramadol though. Sounds like the 2 are a bad combo, and I'm surprised her Drs. who prescribed her meds weren't aware of potential problems (not to mention the pharmacy who filled it)

Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks,girls... but it has gotten worse and she's been hospitalized. For all the praying ladies out there, I'd appreciate it deeply if you'd send a prayer up for her.... Sad and funny how you can be nearly 40 yrs old and it takes something so serious to open your eyes to how much you still need your mom. I'm supposed to be a full grown woman but right now I feel like I'm about 5.

Prayers are on your way.

My Ma was prescribed Tramadol before she had surgery for her brain tumor. The tumor pressed against her internal sinus and would wake her up with awful headaches. But of course Ma being Ma she refused to take it. She has that psychological condition where she is unable to swallow pills...but, she also has an incredible hellish stubborn bone. She never took them, but her dr. believed it best for her prior to surgery. I mean for God's sake, she had a brain tumor causing pain, she needed help. Only thing was she refused. Now she's alive but twice as stubborn.

Good thoughts to you gally.

I'm sorry to hear that she has gotten worse. Prayers and thoughts are on their way!!!

As for my reactions, I became delusional, didn't know where I was at all, I only took two pills and it took about four days to get out of my system. Definitely not something that I want to go through again.

Wow, did they say why it had that effect on you? Were you allergic? Are you able to take other prescription pain killers without trouble? Mom took at least several a day for maybe a solid week before this happened. Her entire personality has changed, she's also been delusional, confused, combative and just totally out of it.

Sorry about all the questions, I'm just so worried and want her better and out of the damned hospital. This is all such a shock.

It's no problem at all - ask away!!

They never said one way or another what it was - my guess is an allergic reaction and no I can't take many pain medicines now, I have reactions to a majority of them now, before I had this happen I had a really serious reaction to a cough syrup with codeine in it that almost put me in the hospital. Now I have to monitor myself on anything I take just to be safe, still paranoid I guess from the hell I went through.

It really sounds like the combination of the two drugs hit your mom hard. What are they giving her now? Are any of the medications they are giving her now to counteract this reaction? Are they doing any tests? Have they called in a neuro consult? Please keep us posted on how she's doing!!

Sometimes you have to really stay on top of the staff and doctors to make certain that your family member gets the best care. Not being negative on anyone in the medical field at all girls so please don't take it that way - I think you all are fabulous!!
