What I've learned from 26 years of running....

I've learned that you can't just do one thing. As much as I love to run, cross training with other disciplines is so much better for my body.

I've really hit the triathlon training hard lately. I notice such a difference in my overall strength when I'm swimming and cycling along with running. As much as I detest swimming, I love what it does to my body....... and, I'm finding that I'm starting to tolerate it much more than I did a year ago...

So, I guess my point is.... I don't think that there's one thing that can do it all for our bodies. Mix it up, it keeps you from getting bored, and forces you to use other muscle groups.

I totally agree. I picked up running when I needed to lose some weight knowing that it was the most bang for your buck calorie burning-wise. But now that I don't need to really lose anymore, I'm finding switching it up is making my body change shape. I don't want to continue to be a smaller version of me. My ass is disappearing and I don't want that. Cycling builds the legs differently, swimming the back muscles. I've only started taking spinning classes.

Good for you runner girl. Problem is you need more gear for these things!!! Bikes are $$$$

Good for you on taking the spin classes! It's a great workout...

How do you practice for the transition stages of a triathlon?
Runnergirl

funny..... I never have practiced that, though I should. I just hurry like heck and hope it all goes smooth. Getting my wetsuit off is the hardest thing for me to do quickly.

2 summers ago, I did a duathlon in Couer d' Alene Idaho. Myself and another lady from Idaho were very evenly matched to take first. Our first run was only seconds apart, we went into transition, and I came out first. She passed me on the bike at about mile 22, I knew I was in trouble. Went back into transition for the last run and I came out ahead. Our 10k time was exactly the same. I won, but I only won because my T-2 was faster than hers. I'm sure she kicks herself for that even still. I know I would. It's such senseless time. It should be practiced and rehearsed...... I should know that from experience, but there are always unexpected things that you just can't practice, like frozen feet, stuck zippers, etc. You just gotta pray that it all goes smooth.

I think adding weights really has helped me to start losing and firming. I am so mad at myself for gaining as much as I did from that stupid job...uggh. Anyway - I agree with mixing things up. Funny I didn't realize that there were specific shoes for cycling...what is different about them?

they are very rigid, light shoes that don't flex so that you have more pedal power, especially on long rides. They also house the cleats on the bottom forefoot of your shoe so that you can clip into your pedals.

I've added a lot more to my routine since we moved here, and I'm loving. I belly dance 2x a week, do hydrojog 1-2x a week, and run here and there. I do feel guilty not running more, but I still feel like I'm in great shape when I do run. And I'm really enjoying my other activities.

I did triatholon training in college in my 20's. I enjoyed it but the swimming just isn't for me. To be honest...ha/ha...it just dries out the hair too much and its a pain to constantly care for. How vain is that!!

I guess I'll stick to running. I should try cross training more to spice it up. I just need to get more dedicated. Runnergirl I'm going to try the AM schedule come summer to get in my workouts. I figure with kids home...its the only time I'll get. I'm hoping it'll become habit. I'd LOVED to have my workouts done by 7am.

I'm with you on the vanity thing.....I've learned that wetting my hair and applying a leave in conditioner before I put my cap on helps tremendously with the "bad swim hair". I still don't love swimming, but I'll do it...

Honestly, I'm so used to that early am workout, I don't know how I'd do it any other way. I hope you like it!!!!

Snippy, I'd love to try the belly dancing, that sounds like a kick!!!! Are you tired when you're done?

Not really, I sweat through it, but it's not intense cardio. I tones different areas than you usually use, I've found a muscle under my ribcage I never knew was there

But I try to run 1-2 miles before and another after to keep my cardio up.
