Yes, they do. I think it must be all of the muscles you use to keep yourself upright on the board? I keep joking with DH that we're going to wind up moving to Maui! Little does he know, it's no joke!

I'm not a great surfer. I've gone a total of three times, but I have to toot my horn in that BF (surfing for over 15 years) was wildly impressed with me. I'd go more often, but where I live the water is cold as ice and there are way too many surfers in the water to get quality time.
Advice, it's pretty tiring. 90% of the time you're paddling around. I'm sure your back muscles are pretty fit from triathlon training.
Start of on a long board, it's bigger and will float you around. Don't get discourage, it's so much harder than it looks. And the water is much more powerful than it looks too. So try not to be too scared. Practice holding your breathe for long periods of time. In hawaii though, i think there's a lot of tourist surf lessons so I think you'll be okay and pretty safe. I've only surfed in Costa Rica. The waves are much bigger and I was pretty scared after being tossed around a few times.

I bet it is harder than it looks! Seems like that's true of so many physical things in life. I think the water is supposed to be fairly calm where we are going at this time of year so I am hoping for some nice, soft baby waves! Well, I will let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the advice, jess!

I would like to try surfing as well. I could use the muscle tone that comes from doing that form of excercise. Just dont do any crazy tricks...remember, you have implants....(we dont want any ruptures)....

Great tips! Definitely start with a long board---maybe an "egg" (long and wide) = more stability.
Stretch very well before you start.
Start in the white wash....easier and it will allow you to practice the balance.
Your instructor will probably have you practice "getting up" on the beach. You can try it at home. First-----do you know which foot will be in front---do you snowboard or skateboard?
If not--stand up facing someone---have them gently shove you backwards---you'll automatically see which foot you step back with.
You'll use this stance when you surf.
Now lay dwon on your belly--and practice pushing up into your surfing stance---it should be one fluid motion onto your feet----do not pause or stop at the knees.
Your instructor will be sooooooooo knowlegeable!!! Have a blast---I think you'll love it!!!

I DID SO LOVE IT!
Tori, they did exactly everything you said except for the pushing me back part to see where I stand. I *think* I am a rightie, or regular, as they called it. Do you do a lot of surfing? Do you use a leash? What type of board do you have?
The hardest part for me was "feeling" the right time to stand. I would either do it too early or more often too late. It was a blast though and those of you who are lucky enough to get to do this sport regularly I am highly jealous of.
The male instructor was SO HOT!!!!!! He had an absolutely amazing body and there were two girl instructors who pulled off wearing thongs with no trouble. I decided after an hour or so that these people have great bodies because of all of the paddling involved. That builds up your arms and is also great cardio plus it felt to me like I was using some core muscles as well. Then, when the wave hits, you are balancing with every muscle in your body to stay up and you are also in a squat position, hence the butt workout.
All in all, I think I used more muscles surfing than ever before. Too bad I can't practice more. I did look into wind surfing for here in CO but so far, it doesn't hold the same interest for me. I should give it a go though before putting it down.
Jamie, I am more scared of getting into a car accident than being bitten by a shark but the thought did cross my mind once or twice.
Carissa, once I wiped out on my board so hard that when I went under the water, my top, bikini top and bottoms all came off! Luckily, I was under water so hopefully no one noticed. I was able to get every thing back up and over again pretty quickly. Luckily, I did not rupture anything that I know of.

I'm so glad you have fun. Unfortuantely where I live it's such a hassel to go surfing (wetsuits, lots of people, traffic). I wish I could get out more. It's such a thrill catching a wave just right. And it takes practice. My boyfriend is leaving for Indonesia this weekend for yet another surf trip and I have to stay home. Ass got two new surf boards too. I'm so jealous.

I lived in Santa Barbara for a short time and remember how cold the water was. I think that's one reason why I never tried surfing there. In HI, things are nice and warm, as you know! I asked one of the instructors if the water gets colder in winter and I think she said no, not really and I thought that was amazing. Ah, I wish I could just move there! I bet Indonesia will be warm too!
