Grew something new

Alfalfa sprouts.  They are so nasty from the store, that I decided to grow my own.  I got some seeds (for sprouting, not planting) and grew them in a canning jar with a screen on the top.  They were easy to grow, you just rinse them 2-3 times a day, and in a week, you have sprouts.

I love growing from seeds, it's so cool!

Not to sound stupid but what do you eat them on? Salads maybe? I would love to do some kind of indoor gardening. I miss my garden so much. Anything else you grow that i may want to copy you on?

We eat them on sandwiches. (with or instead of lettuce)

Right now in my garden I have lettuce (which we are already eating), broccoli, snap peas, carrots, spinach, and radishes.  I have green beans and tomatoes still, but they are on their way out.  I'll be planting onions and garlic pretty soon, when it's a bit colder.

Is any of this inside? We are in the 20s at night so nothing for me outside. Also you said about doing onions when it is colder. What temps do you need? I would love to grow those here if it isn't to cold. Also when do you do potatoes? I remember you did those too. I also see you are finally able to do lettuce. I loved growing that. It was so nice to go out to a garden and pick some lettuce and have a salad.

The sprouts and basil are the only thing I have inside.  I took clippings of my basil and set them in a vase of water and they have set roots.  So now i get fresh basil all winter.

Yes, I finally have lettuce.  It's a winter crop here.(it just tries to bolt if you grow it in the summer)  I do potatoes in the spring and we eat them all summer.  I have a few missed ones that sprouted, so we'll see how they do through the winter.

I would think you'd be able to do carrots and other root veggies as long as you get them in towards the end of summer. (when the temps start cooling)  I think onions/garlic would be fine too, but you'd have to get them in before the ground freezes. (and they need lots of water cuz they don't have much roots, so you have to keep them moist)

I've lived in CA all my life, so I don't know what your winters are like, but it's worth a try.  Just don't do celery in winter.  I had trouble with it getting frost damage.(plus it puts out hell roots and it's damn near impossible to pull it up)

I think our ground is freezing at night so i'll try potatoes and onions next year.

On the basil, do you do a whole leaf or just cut some of it off? Also once it gets roots do you plant it in something? I love having my basil all summer. I would love to have it in the winter. I have 1 plant in my house that i bought from someone. I can use some basil from that to start it in the water.

Just take clippings off the tops of the basil plant. (I took 4 or 5 clippings)  Put them in a vase of water, and add water as needed.  Change the water out once a week.  You don't need to plant them, they will grow in the water.

This is the first year I've done this.  But my clippings have put out LOTS of roots.

A local farmer told me about this.  He also told me you can take a clipping off a fig tree, put it in soil, water it, and it will set roots to have another fig tree.

I thought this was going to be about growing something new from your hooha!
