I've only heard that for perms, never highlights? hopefully somebody will chime in, I've only had highlights once (would like to have them more) and with that I could wash it right away but mine were blonde and were not done with color, only bleaching/lightening.
Genesis

If they are highlights and there ws no color deposited, you can wash it right after. I have my hair highlighted every month and have never had a problem washing my hair right away. If it was a color you would want to wait b/c it can fade much quicker. I usually don't wash it for a day or two after only b/c it is a little dry after getting highlights.

I would think that it wouldn't matter, aren't most highlights just bleach to a degree? Obviously it doesn't look "bleached' if they are not left on as long, but basically if the color is stripped out, washing it is not going to bring it back, KWIM?

well highlights lighten but they can use a color or dye with them so that they lighten but deposit a color. I've just never done that since my hair is blonde.

my stepdaughter works at a salon & she always insists you should wait 2-3 days after getting highlights to wash your hair, but that doesn't make sense to me cuz it's bleach, not a color.......but I have an oily scalp & if I don't wash it daily I get really painful cystic acne on my scalp, so I have never been able to follow my stepdaughter's advice. I've really never noticed my highlights fading........

I can't go more than a day either, my hair looks SUPER oily if I do. The acne sounds PAINFUL fishchick! I have eczema (or psoriasis, not really sure which) on my scalp, and that is bad enough!

for someone like Carissa with dark hair, they do usually use a tinted highlighter (like a lighter dye) if she wanted to do another shade of brown for her highlights. if you have brown hair and try to use bleach to lighten it, it will usually turn red, orange, then blonde if left on long enough.

but I can relate to the scalp issue, mine gets irritated if I don't wash it everyday and gets oily. I find that I have a big problem with a lot of shampoos that use harsh cleansers such as sodium lauryl sulfate or a bunch of other chemicals. I tend to stick to ones from the health food area or buy aubrey organics or sulfate free kinds.

I always try to wait as long as I can (usually two to three days before I start looking too greasy and can no longer take it) and then be sure to rinse with cool water at the end of your shower so that you close up the hair cuticle from now on. This is true for any color treated hair. I also have better luck with shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for color treated hair. How are you liking your new do?

I'm anxiously awaiting it to be all one length but I"m liking it more and more as time goes by

Mine is "highlighted"...and I usually have the base touched up (obvious reasons!!). My stylist puts a slightly darker color for my base and over my highlights because my hair is very porous and does not hold color for long. I usually wait a couple of days after. My peremanent color will actually RINSE out of my hair EVERYTIME I shampoo until I see her again! It has been this way as long as I can remember...with everyone I have gone to.
So my hair LIGHTENS thru out the time before I go back to her because of the color she puts over the highlighted areas...hope that makes sense!

Yes, mine does this too and that's why I often need lowlights as well as highlights. My hair is really porous too and won't hold color.

Bree, are you sure it's psoriasis or ezcema? Another condition that occurs on the scalp that can give somewhat of a similar appearance is sebhorrec(sp?) dermatitis. Basically, it's when the scalp is flaking. In adolescents and adults it's referred to as "dandruff".

My scalp is like this although I've never been "officially" diagnosed but what I"ve found is that it clears up with Neutrogena T GEL shampoo. It's got the coal tar and zinc in it. I use it 2 times aweek in additon to my regular shampoo

My hair is also porous. My hairstylist will wet my hair before dying it. I always wondered why my hair lightend so much I didn't know it was because it was porous. Also my grays do not hold the color very long at all. It sucks.
