I accidentally delete your post response to me in my "rundown" thread. Instead of clicking on quote to respond to you, I clicked on edit and actually editted your post - unintentionally. When I realized what I had done, I tried to cut and paste my response out of your post, and . . . well, I don't know what the hell I did! But your post was gone.

Anyway, you mentioned about more protein for b'fast. I have been reading that. I'm not a big b'fast eater, but I have been trying to eat either oatmeal or a cereal bar. Do you think yougurt has enough substantial proten? I could do yogurt in the morning. Also, I have to take my vitamin with OJ or I'll gag! Milk gives me bad gas, so I avoid that (sorry, I know, TMI!).

Sis~

Greek yogurts have the highest protein content of any yogurt out there. One serving of lowfat=16g of protein. The nonfat serving=20 g. I have both stocked in my fridge at all times. I eat it 2x a day and usually have it with some fresh or frozen berries. It is VERY filling and a great way to start your day. Remember that protein takes longer to digest, so it keeps you filling fuller longer. Trader Joe's has their own Greek yogurt and it's very cheap. If you don't have a TJ's, look for the brand Fage at your local upscale grocery store. Don't get the flavored ones.......they are waaaaaaay too high in fat. I LOVE Greek yogurt because it is so thick and creamy and you can really flavor it anyway you want it. It's not sweetened, so you'll have to add some Splenda or some other sweetener. HTH

Oh yeah! I remember now about Greek yogurt! Duh!!!! I posted a clip from Martha Stewart's show with a doc talking about Greek yogurt being great for b'fast because it was very high protein. Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to stop at the store and see if I can find some.

The closest TJ's to me is about 35 miles. I wish it was closer. We have a few high-end grocery stores nearby . . . I'll check them out for it!

So....you deleted my message- ay. I see how you are....LOL JK I always do silly stuff like that! Yes, i think it's important to start the day with a great breakfast and protein is important. I usually stick to the same breakfast- Steel cut oats topped with almonds, blueberries, and ground flax seed. My nutritionist told me to have it with protein powder and I tried putting it in the oatmeal----BIG mistake! I use rice vanilla rice protein and I just mix it with water. It's only 52 calories and it has 12 grams of protein. That breakfast has everything- complex carbs, fiber, fruit, protein, omegas with the flax, good fat from the nuts.

I don't want you to gag on your pills, so a little juice won't hurt you. If you like bars you should try the bars I listed. They are very healthy and the Organic bar can actually serve as a meal replacement. I can't remember the name, I had to look in the pantry for the last post :engle: If you're interested, I'll get the name for you.

As far as yoghurt, just watch the sugar. IMO it is not a complete breakfast, but occasionally it's not bad. If you do have it- I would mix in some nuts and maybe a little low-sugar fruit, like green apples.

Why the emphasis on "steel cut" oats, just curioius?

Also, with the juice, honestly it's like 4 or 5 ounces if that - just enough to swallow the pill. And, I've been buying the light OJ (supposedly less sugar).

I ususally add wheat germ to my yogurt - like the crunch and great for adding vit E and folic acd - which is giving me 4 extra grams of protetin, but 6 grams of carbs. Should I skip the wheat germ and try something else? Which nuts do you use?

Sissy,
Something to add to your yoghurt-

You can actually make your own muesli---it's really easy and yummy. You can bake it or soak it. If you bake it, just spread oats(rolled- old-fashioned- not instant), chopped nuts (hazelnut or almonds-raw), raw seeds (sunflower, pepitas) and raw unsweetened coconut on a lightly sprayed baking sheet and cook 15 min at 350. You can also make this by soaking. You simply soak the oats in milk- 1:1 ratio- overnight. In the morning add seeds, nuts, green apple, 1 Tbsp ground flax and then top with 1 cup yoghurt. Viola!

I prefer steel cut because they are less processed ( it's the entire kernal called groats)and healthier than rolled. (although for muesli rolled is better) Because they are not preprocessed, they retain more of the "good stuff." They are nuttier and a little firmer. They also take longer to cook.

I use almonds or walnuts.

I prefer ground flax to wheat germ. "Flaxseed is high in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and phytochemicals called lignans. Flaxseed can help reduce total blood cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels — and, as a result, may help reduce the risk of heart disease."

I caught the tail end of a guest spot on Martha Stewart today. Didn't catch her name, but she was making an "anitoxidant" salad that was just filled with good, crunchy stuff. Nothing obscure or exotic. One of the things she was adding was flax seed. She said by using flax seed now on a regular basis, twenty years down the road you'll be glad you did.

I'm going to head over the Martha's site now and check out the details on this guest. Also, they were previewing some breakfast ideas from the new magazine "Blueprint" which is on newsstands 3/5, I think. They asked, I think three different people: a nutritionist, trainer and someone else (can't remember now) for they're ideal, healthy good start breakfast. The dishes sounded great. One of the ideas was oatmeal (STEEL CUT!!).

It's healty eating ideas are popping up everywhere! It's great! And they're suggesting using products that are easy to find. Honestly, I can't see myself making yet another stop, and going out of my way, to find a health food store for certain ingredients. A lot of the ingredients I've been hearing about, I've seen in my grocery store!

Yep- flax is great. My nutritionist says she prefers ground and I love it. I put it on my oatmeal, in my smoothies, on salads. You're absolutely right- it is really just about real food- nothing fancy. Right now I'm going to make a smoothie- it's yummy, it fills me up for hours, and it is a nutritional powerhouse. I use rice protein powder, fresh or frozen berries, my greens, raw pepitas water(maybe a little cocnut/pineapple juice and a half of a banana. If the fruit is tart then I throw in a half of a packet of stevia. Yum-yum!!
I'll look forward to seeing that magazine. Thanks for the info!!

Sissy, you can crack an egg into your oatmeal and mix it well before cooking too. It makes it really thick, almost like a custard. The boys don't know it's there, and it makes oatmeal stick to your ribs a little better!

Tori, what kind of blueberries do you use? Fresh, frozen, dried? I usually put raisins because the boys love them, but I know they're high in sugar.

The egg is a good idea.

I usually use frozen organic blueberries. If they're in season and look good I'll do fresh but the spoil so quickly and I eat that breakfast at least 4 days per week so I like always have some frozen berries in the freezer. Sometimes i use fresh strawberries and that is really tasty.

No way! Really? An egg in oatmeal! I would have never though of that! I'm definitely going to try that one.

I think I did very well today. I had the new Dannon Light & Fit Yogurt Crave Control. It has 60% less sugar and has this Protein Fiber Plus stuff in it. I sprinkled wheat germ in it. I don't know if it's psychological or not, but it really kept me going (cleaning a huge house all morning) until I got home at 2:00. I made a nice side salad with chicpeas, cut up turkey and ham, cottage cheese and I sprinkled some trail mix on it. It's 6:00, and I'm still not hungry.

As a matter of fact, I'm getting ready to jump on the 'mill and get my 4 miles in!

I think I'm going to head out to the grocery store this weekend an look for some of the things you've been telling me about. I'm getting psyched now!
