Here you go Sissy. I have tried a couple of recipes for pesto, but this is my favorite. I do use pine nuts, but if you buy them loose in the natural food section, they are cheaper.
2 cups fresh basil
1 cup fresh Italian parsley
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
1/2 cup pine nuts
4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 cup olive oil
1 TBS lemon juice
2 TBS water
Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender. Puree until the mixture forms a smooth, thick paste.

Thanks! I'll have to print this out and save it. This summer when I'm once again growing all that basil and italian parsley in the garden, I'll be able to use it the way I'm always intending to! _________________

You plant them either from seeds or from plants that have already sprouted that you get from a nursery. I planted my basil from seeds last summer in a raised garden bed. |

Herbs like somewhat of a loose/sandy soil mixture. I have a separate herb garden for my perennial herbs - sage, thyme, chives, oregano, lovage, etc. However, the tender herbs ("tender" for my planting zone) - parsley, basil, rosemary - I plant right in my vegetable garden which is rich loamy soil.
They also like to dry out in between waterings and don't like a lot of fertilizer. Most herbs do really well in pots too.
Not only do I have herbs in my gardens, but I keep a huge planter on my deck right by the kitchen filled with herbs I use a lot. So, if I'm too lazy to walk out to the garden, I can just go out on the deck and snip off some parsley, oregano, rosemary . . . whatever I need for the dish I'm preparing. _________________

| Bec......I recommend planting oregano and rosemary in a pot. They tend to take over otherwise. |
