Brown Bag Apple Pie
6-7 Granny Smith apples, pared, cored, and sliced
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 stick butter
1 cup sugar
½ cup flour
1 deep dish pie pan
Mix ½ cup sugar and 2 tablespoons flour and cinnamon. Add this mixture to apples and vanilla until apples are well coated.
Place in unbaked crust. Cut the butter into remaining sugar and flour until very crumbly, spread over apples in pie crust. (you can add raisins or nuts if desired now)
Put top crust over apples.
Crimp edges so that upper and lower crust merge.
Cut 6 vent holes with a knife.
Place pie into a brown grocery store shopping bag. Seal with staples or paper clips.
Place bag flat side down on to a cookie sheet for easy handling.
Bake for 1 hour at 425 degrees.
Immediately cut bag open to completely expose pie and allow pie to cool on rack.
You"ll notice that as the pie bakes and the bag heats it will get darker in color-- that's normal. Be sure to use oven mitts when you open the bag after the pie is baked, there will be a small amount of steam escaping from the bag.
